ZnSe Optical Window Explained | CO2 Laser Protective Optics - Felix Glass

ZnSe Optical Window Explained

Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) is the most widely used infrared optical material for industrial CO₂ laser systems at 10.6 μm. ZnSe optical windows act as protective barriers, blocking smoke, debris and spatter while maintaining high transmittance for the infrared laser beam.

Key Optical & Physical Properties of ZnSe Windows

Parameter Specification & Notes
Transmission Range 0.6 μm ~ 18 μm, optimized for 10.6 μm CO₂ laser
Refractive Index @10.6μm ~2.40
Recommended Coating AR coating @10.6 μm for >99% transmission
Hardness Soft and scratch-sensitive; requires careful handling
Laser Damage Threshold High for continuous-wave CO₂ laser; avoid surface contamination

Available Coating Options

  • Single-band AR coating for 10.6 μm CO₂ laser (standard choice)
  • Dual-band AR coating for 10.6 μm IR + visible red alignment beam
  • High-power AR coating for high wattage continuous CO₂ laser machines

Common Failure Causes & Maintenance Tips

  • Surface scratches: caused by improper wiping, dirty cloth or hard particles
  • Burn spots: contamination from smoke, oil or spatter on the coating surface
  • Cleanness rule: only use optical-grade lens paper and isopropyl alcohol for cleaning
  • Store ZnSe windows in dry environment; avoid long-term exposure to humid air

Typical Applications

  • CO₂ laser cutting machines, laser engravers and laser markers
  • Industrial non-metal processing: acrylic, wood, leather, rubber and fabric
  • Infrared thermal imaging and FTIR spectroscopy systems
  • Laser beam delivery protective optics for OEM laser equipment
