    FELIX GLASS SUBSEA DOME FAQ

3000m vs 7000m vs Flanged Optical Dome Port: How to Choose Subsea Dome

Selecting the correct subsea optical dome port requires balancing operating depth, mechanical reliability, optical performance, assembly design, project budget and mission criticality. This FAQ summarizes core tradeoffs between 3000m rated dome, 7000m rated dome, standard standalone dome and monolithic integrated flanged dome port.

Q1: What are the differences between 3000m and 7000m subsea dome ports?

3000m (300 bar) dome: Widely used for mid-depth ROV inspection, underwater camera and shallow subsea LiDAR. JGS1 fused silica is the common substrate. Minimum safety factor 1.5 for long-term deployment. FEA simulation is optional but strongly recommended for LiDAR domes. Standard standalone dome is cost-effective for retrofitting existing housings.

7000m (700 bar) ultra-deep dome: Designed for abyssal missions, requires C-axis sapphire for superior compressive strength. FEA simulation with safety factor validation is mandatory before machining. Minimum safety factor 2.0 for long-term dive cycles. Integrated flanged dome is preferred to minimize sealing interfaces and leakage risk. Production lead time is longer due to FEA, thicker wall and stricter mechanical validation.

Q2: Standard dome vs integrated flanged dome, which one should I pick?

Standard hemispherical dome: Uses separate retainer ring for mounting. Lower machining cost, ideal when you already have existing housing retainers. It has one extra sealing interface with slightly higher cyclic-pressure leakage risk.

Integrated flanged dome: Machined from a single optical blank. Direct bolt-on installation without retainer ring. Only one sealing surface on flange face, fewer leakage paths. Best for new housing development and high-reliability deep sea projects. Custom flange bolt circle and O-ring step can be manufactured per your drawing.

Q3: Quick selection checklist for subsea dome port

    • Operating depth ≤3000m, existing housing: Standard fused silica dome
    • Operating depth ≤3000m, new housing & high reliability: Flanged fused silica dome
    • Operating depth up to 7000m, any new housing: Flanged sapphire dome
    • Subsea LiDAR application: Tight optical specs, custom laser AR coating, FEA recommended regardless of depth
    • Budget limited, retrofit project: Standard dome with standard optical specs

Q4: What other parameters should I consider besides depth and dome type?

Optical specifications (scratch-dig grade, surface figure, diameter tolerance), AR coating, hydrostatic pressure certification, lead time and MOQ also affect your final selection. Damaged domes with deep scratches or cracks cannot be repaired and need replacement; minor shallow scratches may be re-polished but pressure certification may become invalid.

Q5: Which dome type is best for 7000m project?

A: Integrated flanged sapphire dome with mandatory FEA validation is the top recommendation for 7000m long-term missions.

Q6: Can I use flanged dome on my existing housing?

A: Only if flange OD, bolt circle and O-ring sealing step match your housing drawing.

Q7: What material should I pick for 3000m LiDAR dome?

A: JGS1 fused silica with laser-tuned AR coating is commonly used for 3000m subsea LiDAR.

Q8: Is hydrostatic test required for all orders?

A: Hydrostatic pressure test is optional certification. FEA is mandatory for all 7000m dome manufacturing.

    FELIX GLASS SUBSEA DOME FAQ

Can subsea optical dome port be repaired after scratch?

Minor surface scratches affect optical performance and may create coating failure points. Repair feasibility depends on scratch depth, substrate material and optical tolerance requirements.

    Scratch repair rules

    • Very shallow surface scratches: can be re-polished, but material removal will alter dome radius and dimensional tolerance.
    • Deep scratches, cracks or chips: cannot be repaired; dome replacement required.
    • AR coating damage: full recoating is possible only after surface refinishing.

    Material difference

Sapphire is harder and more scratch resistant than fused silica. But once deep scratches form on sapphire, re-polishing takes longer and costs more.

    Important Warning

Re-polishing changes wall thickness. If the dome is pressure-rated for deep sea, rework may reduce safety factor and invalidate FEA / hydrostatic test certification.

    FAQ

Q: Can deep scratches on sapphire dome be fixed?
A: Deep scratches or cracks cannot be repaired, replacement is needed.

Q: Will re-polishing affect pressure rating?
A: Yes, material removal reduces wall thickness, may lower safety factor and void certification.

Q: Can I re-coat only the damaged area?
A: No, AR coating needs full surface stripping and re-deposition for uniform performance.

  • 8.Safety Factor for Deep Sea Optical Dome Ports | Subsea Dome Design

    FELIX GLASS SUBSEA DOME FAQ

Safety Factor for Deep Sea Optical Dome Ports

Safety factor is the ratio between material failure load and actual working hydrostatic pressure. It is the core design parameter to avoid dome cracking under deep ocean pressure, cyclic loading and unexpected pressure spikes.

    Recommended Safety Factor

    • 3000m (300 bar) long-term deployment: minimum safety factor 1.5
    • 7000m (700 bar) abyssal long-term mission: minimum safety factor 2.0

    Why safety factor matters

Ocean equipment faces cyclic dive-ascent pressure, vibration, minor material defects and temperature variation. A safety margin prevents sudden brittle fracture during field operation.

    How we validate safety factor

FEA finite element simulation calculates peak stress and checks safety factor in design phase. For 7000m domes, FEA with safety factor validation is mandatory before machining.

    FAQ

Q: Can I use safety factor 1.2 for 7000m dome?
A: Not recommended. 7000m abyssal application requires minimum safety factor of 2.0 for reliable long-term service.

Q: Is safety factor calculated in FEA report?
A: Yes, our FEA results include safety factor analysis for critical stress hotspots.

Q: Does flanged dome need higher safety factor?
A: Same safety factor standard applies, but FEA must check stress at dome-flange transition zone.

  • 4.Hydrostatic Pressure Test for Subsea Dome Port | Felix Glass

    FELIX GLASS SUBSEA DOME FAQ

Hydrostatic Pressure Test for Subsea Dome Port

Hydrostatic pressure test is physical pressure testing to verify the optical dome can withstand its rated water depth pressure before deployment. It is an optional validation step after optical polishing.

    How hydrostatic test works

The dome sample is placed inside pressure chamber, pressurized to target pressure (300 bar for 3000m,700 bar for 7000m), hold for specified duration, then inspect for crack, leakage or permanent deformation.

    What you get after test

We can issue official hydrostatic test certificate for equipment qualification, third-party audit and marine project documentation.

    Important limitation

Hydrostatic test only validates static pressure resistance. It cannot fully replicate cyclic pressure, vibration and marine biofouling in real deep ocean environment, so sufficient safety factor is still required.

    FAQ

Q: Is hydrostatic test mandatory for all dome orders?
A: No, it is optional. FEA simulation is mandatory for all 7000m dome before machining.

Q: Can you test flanged dome port?

  • 2.What is FEA simulation for subsea dome port? | Felix Glass

What is FEA simulation for subsea dome port?

FEA (Finite Element Analysis) simulation is a computer-based stress simulation to predict stress distribution, peak pressure load and crack risk on optical dome ports under deep-sea hydrostatic pressure.

Why run FEA for subsea dome port?

Underwater dome failure usually occurs at stress hotspots, especially the dome root, or the transition area between hemisphere and flange for integrated flanged domes. FEA helps engineers optimize wall thickness and geometry before cutting optical blank, avoiding costly prototype cracking.

When FEA is mandatory or recommended?

    • All 7000m rated dome ports: FEA simulation mandatory before machining
    • 3000m dome ports for long-term deployment: FEA strongly recommended
    • Integrated flanged dome: extra check for dome-flange transition stress

    What will FEA report include?

    • Full stress contour map under rated hydrostatic pressure
    • Identify peak stress locations
    • Calculate safety factor against material failure
    • Geometry optimization suggestions

    Common wrong assumption

You cannot simply scale up 3000m dome wall thickness and use it directly for 7000m application. Pressure stress does not increase linearly. FEA is required for every new geometry.

    FAQ

Q: Is FEA required for 3000m subsea dome?
A: Not mandatory, but strongly recommended for long cycle dive missions to improve reliability.

Q: Do you provide FEA report for dome orders?
A: Yes, FEA document will be delivered together for all 7000m dome projects.

Q: Can flanged dome skip FEA simulation?
A: No, flanged dome has critical transition zone; 7000m flanged dome requires FEA.

Q: Does FEA replace hydrostatic pressure test?
A: No. FEA is simulation in design phase. Hydrostatic test is physical verification after manufacturing.

CTA: Send your dome drawing, we run FEA stress analysis and DFM review for your subsea dome port.

  • 1.What Material Is Best for Subsea Optical Dome Port? | Felix Glass

What material is best for subsea optical dome port?

Selecting the right substrate is critical for subsea dome port performance, pressure resistance and service life. The three common optical materials are C-axis Sapphire, JGS1 Fused Silica and BK7 optical glass. Acrylic is not recommended for deep-water pressure applications.

    C-axis Sapphire

Sapphire is the top choice for 7000m abyssal deployment. It features outstanding compressive strength, excellent scratch resistance and stable optical transmission under high hydrostatic pressure. It resists seawater corrosion well. The main downside is higher raw material and machining cost.

    JGS1 Fused Silica

JGS1 fused silica is ideal for 3000m mid-depth ROV and AUV projects. It delivers balanced optical performance, good seawater resistance and competitive pricing. For 7000m service, fused silica dome needs reinforced wall geometry and full FEA validation before production.

    BK7 Optical Glass

BK7 has lower compressive strength. It is only acceptable for short-duration, shallow-water missions with strict annealing treatment. Not suitable for 7000m ultra-deep use.

    Acrylic PMMA

Acrylic suffers creep deformation under high pressure. It is forbidden for 3000m and 7000m subsea dome applications.

    Quick Material Selection Guide

    • 7000m long-term deep sea → C-axis Sapphire
    • 3000m commercial inspection ROV → JGS1 Fused Silica
    • Short mission, limited budget, shallow depth only → BK7 (with limitation)

    FAQ

Q: Is sapphire better than fused silica for underwater dome?
A: Sapphire has superior compressive strength for ultra-deep 7000m. Fused silica offers cost advantage for mid-depth 3000m projects.

Q: Can BK7 glass be used for 7000m dome port?
A: No, BK7 does not have enough compressive strength for 700 bar pressure.

Q: Does seawater corrode fused silica or sapphire?
A: Both materials have excellent resistance to seawater corrosion.

Q: Can we add AR coating on sapphire and fused silica domes?
A: Yes, broadband AR anti-reflection coating can be applied on both substrates.

Q: Are your dome ports custom size?
A: Yes, custom diameter from 20mm to 60mm available.

  • Q15: What packaging do you use for precision optical components?

    A:

We adopt dedicated protective packaging solutions for precision optical components to avoid scratches, chipping, contamination and shock damage during transit, especially for international sea or air shipment.

For small optical windows, lenses and filter chips: Each piece is individually sealed in cleanroom anti-static PE bag or lens tissue, then placed into custom-cut EVA / PU foam trays. The foam holds each optical part separately to eliminate surface friction and collision. For large panels, display cover glass and optical domes: We use interleaving protective paper between glass surfaces, surrounded by shock absorbing foam, then packed into rigid export cartons. Heavy or high-value sapphire parts can be packed in plywood cases upon request.

All packaging materials are low-dust and non-abrasive, which will not leave residues or scratch polished optical surfaces. • Can Felix Glass supply matched optical components for harsh UV, outdoor, marine and high-temperature

    A:

Yes, Felix Glass is fully capable of supplying matched optical components designed and manufactured specifically for harsh UV exposure, outdoor open-air deployment, marine coastal salt-spray environments and continuous high-temperature operating scenarios. We fully understand that optical parts working under these extreme conditions face multiple risks including UV photo-degradation, salt fog corrosion, thermal expansion stress, temperature cycling fatigue, moisture penetration and surface abrasion, so our material selection and coating design will be customized according to customers’ actual working parameters.

For UV-heavy environments, we choose high-transmittance fused silica glass instead of regular soda-lime glass, which features excellent UV spectral transmission and strong resistance against UV aging and yellowing over long service cycles. For marine and coastal applications, we adopt multi-layer waterproof and anti-corrosion coating stacks, plus strengthened edge sealing treatment, to block salt mist, humidity and chloride ion erosion. This anti-salt-fog treatment can pass standardized salt spray aging testing to guarantee stable optical performance in offshore, shipboard and seaside equipment.

For high-temperature working environments, we select low thermal expansion substrates such as fused silica or borosilicate glass. These materials minimize thermal deformation and optical distortion when temperature rises, maintaining consistent optical performance without bending, cracking or coating peeling. We also provide enhanced tempered glass options for outdoor industrial and automotive display applications, with high mechanical impact resistance.

Our engineering team will first collect your detailed environmental parameters including working temperature range, UV wavelength band, humidity level, salt exposure grade and expected service lifetime, then recommend the most suitable glass substrate, coating type and edge protection solution. Before mass production, we can deliver prototype samples for environmental aging tests such as thermal cycling, salt spray, UV accelerated aging and damp heat testing. All finished optical components will go through full optical inspection and mechanical quality checks before shipment. We can also support third-party verification according to your project requirements. • Q6: What is AR coating used for?| Felix Glass FAQ

A: AR coating, short for Anti-Reflection coating, is a widely used functional thin-film coating applied on optical glass surface, and it is one of Felix Glass’s core coating capabilities. The main function of AR coating is to reduce unwanted light reflection at air-glass interface, increase light transmittance and remove disturbing ghost reflection and glare.

When light passes from air into bare glass surface, part of light will be reflected back. This reflected light causes screen reflection, reduces image clarity and wastes light energy. AR coating stacks multiple layers of optical thin films to offset reflected light through light interference principle, minimizing surface reflectivity. For automotive and industrial display cover glass, AR coating greatly improves screen readability under strong sunlight. Without AR coating, bright outdoor environment will create heavy mirror reflection on display surface and make screen content hard to read. With proper AR coating, the display keeps clear view even under direct sunlight.

For optical windows and optical lenses, AR coating raises total light throughput of the optical system, reduces light loss and improves signal strength for optical sensors. AR coating can be customized for different target wavelength bands, covering visible light band for display screens, near-infrared band for optical sensing or UV band for ultraviolet optical instruments.

Combined with AF anti-fingerprint overcoat, AR coated glass can achieve both high optical transmittance and easy-clean surface. Our AR coating has strong adhesion, good scratch resistance and stable performance under temperature cycling and outdoor aging environment. AR coated tempered glass cover is widely used in automotive dashboard displays, industrial HMI touch monitors, outdoor smart screens, medical optical windows and various precision optical components.

  • Q5: What coating options are available?

A: Felix Glass provides a full portfolio of functional thin-film coatings for optical glass and display cover glass, including AR anti-reflection coating, AG anti-glare coating, AF anti-fingerprint coating and high-reflection silver coating for solar mirrors. We also support custom coating development for special optical spectrum requirements.

AR (Anti-Reflection Coating): Reduce surface reflection and boost light transmittance. Mainly applied for automotive and industrial display glass, optical windows. We can tune AR coating for visible, near-infrared or UV wavelength bands to match your optical system requirement. It greatly improves sunlight readability for touch display panels.

AG (Anti-Glare Coating): Diffuse reflected light to eliminate sharp mirror-like glare. AG treatment scatters ambient reflection, so users will not see clear environmental reflection on screen surface. It is popular for industrial HMI and automotive touch displays to protect eyesight and improve touch operation experience.

AF (Anti-Fingerprint Coating): Oleophobic and hydrophobic nano coating on glass top surface. It repels oil, water and fingerprint residues. Fingerprint marks can be wiped away easily, keeping glass surface clean for touch screen operations. AF coating is usually combined with AR or AG coating as top layer.

High-reflective silver coating: This coating system is designed for solar CSP mirror glass. It achieves ≥95% high reflectivity across solar spectrum, equipped with copper barrier layer and multi-layer protective waterproof coating to resist outdoor weathering and corrosion for long service life in solar power plants.

Except these standard coating types, our thin-film team can also develop customized coating stacks for special projects, such as IR cut coating, band pass coating or low-reflection coating for specific wavelength requirements. All coatings go through strict adhesion test, abrasion test and aging reliability test before delivery. We will recommend the most suitable coating combination after learning your application environment and optical targets.

  • Q3: When should sapphire be used in optical components?

A: Sapphire crystal is premium optical substrate material, and it should be chosen for optical components when your application requires extreme mechanical hardness, outstanding scratch resistance, high temperature stability and strong chemical corrosion resistance, which normal optical glass cannot satisfy.

Sapphire ranks 9 on Mohs hardness scale, only softer than diamond. It has superior wear resistance and scratch-proof capability, suitable for optical windows that face continuous friction, particle abrasion or heavy mechanical contact. For example, high-speed equipment observation windows, handheld measurement device front protective windows, or optical parts exposed to sand and dust impact will benefit greatly from sapphire material.

Besides hardness, sapphire features wide spectral transmission range, stable performance under high temperature and excellent resistance against acid, alkali and chemical erosion. It can keep stable optical property in high-temperature working environments and strong chemical corrosive atmosphere, where BK7 or fused silica may degrade. It is widely used for high-end sensor windows, military optical protection windows, high-temperature instrument viewports and medical invasive optical components.

However, sapphire has higher raw material cost and harder machining difficulty, which will increase component price and lead time. Our engineers will evaluate whether sapphire is necessary for your project. If your working condition does not need such extreme hardness, we will recommend fused silica, BK7 or aluminosilicate tempered glass as cost-effective alternatives to balance performance and budget. We supply custom-cut, polished and coated sapphire optical windows. We will compare material pros & cons and help you make the best substrate selection decision for your optical system.

We fabricate finished sapphire optical windows and sapphire optical domes for harsh environment optical systems.

  • Q2: What is the difference between BK7 and fused silica?

A: BK7 and fused silica (fused quartz) are two most widely used optical substrate materials, but they differ greatly in spectral transmission, thermal property, chemical resistance and applicable working scenarios. Felix Glass supplies both materials for custom optical components.

BK7 is a borosilicate crown optical glass. It has excellent optical homogeneity in visible light spectrum, low bubble and striae level, easy to machine and cost competitive. BK7 works perfectly for optical components used under visible wavelength, such as common optical lenses, visible-band optical windows and display protective glass working at normal room temperature. Its limitation is poor UV transmission: BK7 will strongly absorb ultraviolet light below ~350nm, so it cannot be used for UV optical systems. BK7 also has relatively higher thermal expansion coefficient compared with fused silica, so it is not suitable for rapid temperature cycling or high-temperature environments.

Fused silica, also known as fused quartz, is made from pure silicon dioxide. Its biggest advantage is outstanding transmission in deep UV band, so it is the primary choice for ultraviolet optical instruments and UV sensing windows. Meanwhile, fused silica features ultra-low thermal expansion coefficient. It can withstand dramatic temperature change and high temperature working condition without thermal deformation or cracking. It also has superior chemical resistance against acid and most corrosive substances.

The trade-off of fused silica is higher raw material price and more difficult polishing & machining than BK7. So it is more expensive. To sum up: choose BK7 if your optical system works in visible light at normal temperature and you need cost-effective optical glass. Choose fused silica if your application involves UV wavelength, high temperature or rapid thermal cycling. Our optical engineers will help you pick the right substrate after checking your working wavelength and environmental parameters.

  • Q1: What optical materials do you use for custom components?

A: Felix Glass processes custom optical components from a full range of optical-grade substrate materials, covering visible, near-IR, mid-IR and UV spectral bands. Our engineering team helps customers select the most suitable material based on working wavelength, environmental conditions, mechanical load, thermal cycling requirements and budget, so that every optical dome, window, prism, lens or mirror performs reliably in its real operating environment.

Visible & general optics — BK7 / Borosilicate Crown Glass BK7 (equivalent to SCHOTT N-BK7 and H-K9L) is our most commonly used crown optical glass for visible and near-infrared applications. It offers excellent optical homogeneity, low internal striae, good polishability and cost-effective pricing. Typical components include visible-band windows, precision prisms, lenses and relay optics for machine vision, inspection equipment and industrial sensors. Borosilicate crown glass is selected when higher thermal shock resistance is required for outdoor or temperature-fluctuating environments.

UV & high-temperature optics — Fused Silica (Fused Quartz) For ultraviolet transmission, deep-UV lithography, UV curing and high-temperature optical systems, we use synthetic or natural fused silica. Fused silica delivers outstanding deep-UV transmission down to 185nm, ultra-low coefficient of thermal expansion, and excellent resistance against thermal shock and chemical corrosion. It is the standard choice for UV optical windows, excimer laser optics, high-temperature viewports and space-qualified visible/UV components.

Harsh-environment & wear optics — Sapphire Sapphire single-crystal (Al₂O₃) is processed for components facing extreme abrasion, high pressure, seawater, high temperature or chemical attack. With Mohs hardness 9, sapphire domes and sapphire windows are widely used in ROV subsea viewports, military EO/IR sensor windows, high-pressure gauge glasses and high-wear protective covers. We supply both c-axis and a-axis oriented sapphire substrates per customer drawing.

Infrared laser & thermal imaging — ZnSe, ZnS, Germanium, Silicon For CO₂ laser systems (10.6μm), thermal imaging and FLIR infrared applications, we process zinc selenide (ZnSe), zinc sulfide (ZnS, multispectral CVD), germanium (Ge) and silicon (Si) optical blanks. ZnSe is the standard window and lens material for high-power CO₂ laser cutting and welding optics. ZnS (multispectral) is used for broadband IR sensor windows and domes. Germanium is the primary material for 8–12μm long-wave thermal imaging lenses. Silicon is selected for 3–5μm mid-wave IR systems where weight is a concern.

Full material traceability & quality assurance All substrate raw materials are sourced from qualified optical glass manufacturers (SCHOTT, Heraeus, Corning, Kyocera and equivalent). Every incoming batch is accompanied by material certificates, and we retain mill certs and batch records for full traceability. Before machining, our QC team verifies material identification by spectral transmission check, refractive index reading and visual inspection for internal bubbles, inclusions and striae. After CNC cutting, grinding, polishing and coating, each component passes dimensional, surface quality and optical performance inspection. We support third-party witness inspection for bulk OEM orders.

If you are unsure which substrate fits your system, simply send us your working wavelength range, environment specs and drawing. Our optical engineers will recommend 2–3 material options with a clear trade-off comparison, then produce prototype samples for your validation.

  • Q7: How to select & process customized quartz glass?

How to select the suitable quartz glass grade for projects?

The core of selection is to combine the working spectral band and actual working environment. If your project focuses on deep ultraviolet transmission such as UV lithography and ultraviolet detection, JGS1 is the preferred option. For conventional visible light and near-ultraviolet optical equipment, JGS2 can fully meet the requirements. If the equipment works in the infrared band, JGS3 with optimized infrared performance is the best choice. For semiconductor production lines with ultra-high purity requirements, synthetic fused silica is a must. We suggest providing detailed working conditions, spectral parameters and usage environment, and our technical team will recommend the most cost-effective solution.

What are the key points for quartz glass machining?

Quartz glass has high hardness and brittleness, so the processing requirements are much stricter than ordinary glass. Cutting and grinding must adopt professional diamond tools. For semiconductor-grade high-precision optical parts, CMP chemical mechanical polishing is used to achieve sub-nanometer surface roughness. After machining, annealing treatment is indispensable to release internal stress and prevent cracking during later use. For ultra-high purity products used in semiconductors, the whole processing process needs to be completed in a dust-free clean room to avoid surface contamination. Meanwhile, we support customized processing according to customer drawings, samples and special technical indicators.

  • Q6: What purity grades of quartz glass can you supply?
A: We provide quartz glass with three differentiated purity levels, tailored to distinct industrial standards, optical performance demands and semiconductor manufacturing cleanliness requirements, covering low-cost conventional equipment, precision optical instruments and ultra-clean wafer processing scenarios respectively.

    1. Industrial Purity Grade Quartz Glass
This entry-level grade features a silica content of minimum 99.95%, with controlled trace metal impurities at ppm levels. It is widely applied in conventional high-temperature furnaces, infrared heating tubes, boiler sight glass, laboratory general reaction vessels and ordinary mechanical processing parts. The material balances stable heat resistance and cost efficiency, with loose restrictions on internal hydroxyl content and tiny air bubbles, fully meeting non-precision industrial operating standards. It supports common cutting, grinding and bending machining without strict ultra-clean production environment demands.

  • Q5: What is the temperature resistance limit of quartz glass?

    A:

Quartz glass has an ultra-low linear expansion coefficient of only 5.5×10⁻⁷/°C, giving it excellent anti-quenching ability. Certified products can resist temperature alternations with a 1000°C temperature difference without cracking or deformation. A typical test: heating quartz sheet to 1100°C then quenching in room-temperature water will not break the product, an advantage ordinary heat-resistant glass cannot match.

    4. How Purity & Hydroxyl Affect Temperature Resistance

Hydroxyl (-OH) impurities are the key factor that changes high-temperature performance:
    • High OH quartz (>800ppm): Long-term temperature drops 30–50°C, prone to devitrification above 1100°C
    • Medium OH electric-melt quartz (100–300ppm): Balanced cost and heat resistance, standard 1100°C long-term limit
    • Ultra-low OH synthetic quartz (≤10ppm): Stable at 1200°C long-term, little performance loss after hundreds of thermal cycles Excess metal impurities like sodium and aluminum will also accelerate surface crystallization at high heat and lower the usable temperature ceiling.

    5. JGS Grade Temperature Parameter Reference

    • JGS1 Far UV Synthetic Quartz: Long-term 1150–1200°C, short peak 1400°C, for UV lithography & semiconductor high-temp windows
    • JGS2 UV-VIS Synthetic Quartz: Long-term 1100–1150°C, short peak 1350°C, for lab furnace sight glass & precision thermal instruments
    • JGS3 Infrared Electric-Melt Quartz: Long-term 1100°C, short peak 1300°C, for infrared heating equipment

    6. Practical Usage Tips

    1. Vacuum working environment: Reduce long-term allowable temperature by 50–100°C to avoid silica volatilization
    2. Avoid direct contact with molten alkali metal above 900°C, chemical corrosion will shorten service life
    3. Slow cooling (≤5°C/min) after high-temperature operation to prevent thermal shock cracks
To sum up, the universal industrial temperature resistance standard of quartz glass is 1100–1200°C for long continuous work, 1300°C for short transient heating. The actual usable temperature is adjusted by material grade, purity, atmosphere and thermal cycle frequency.

  • Q4: What are the main types of quartz glass?

Product Classifications & JGS Optical Grades

Q4: How many types of quartz glass are there? What are JGS1, JGS2 and JGS3?

A: Quartz glass has two mainstream classification methods, divided by manufacturing process and optical grade respectively. Classified by production craft, there are four main categories. Synthetic fused silica features ultra-high purity for high-end optics and semiconductors. Electrically fused quartz has low hydroxyl content and stable performance under high temperature. Gas-fused quartz is cost-effective and widely used in general industrial occasions. Opaque quartz glass contains tiny air bubbles inside, mainly used for heat insulation.

  • Q3: What is the difference between quartz glass and ordinary glass?

Q3: What fundamental differences exist between quartz glass and common soda-lime glass?

A: Ordinary soda-lime glass is the most common glass for daily use, while quartz glass belongs to high-performance special glass. The gaps between them are reflected in composition, heat resistance, optical performance, chemical stability and production process. In terms of chemical composition, ordinary glass contains only 70% to 75% silicon dioxide, and a large amount of soda ash, lime and other additives are added to reduce the melting temperature. In contrast, quartz glass is almost purely composed of silica. When it comes to thermal performance, ordinary glass will gradually soften at around 600°C, and it is very easy to crack when encountering rapid temperature changes. Quartz glass can work continuously at 1100°C to 1200°C, and its thermal expansion coefficient is nearly zero, so it can withstand drastic cold and hot impact. For optical performance, ordinary glass cannot transmit ultraviolet light below 300 nm, while quartz glass realizes full-spectrum transmission from deep UV to infrared. Chemically, quartz glass is resistant to erosion by most acids and organic solvents, while ordinary glass is vulnerable to corrosion by alkaline substances. Besides, the production of quartz glass needs to reach over 2000°C, which puts forward higher requirements on production equipment and technology.

  • What is the difference between optical dome and ordinary glass?
There are essential differences in raw material composition, production process, optical performance and application scenarios between professional optical domes and ordinary glass.

Ordinary glass mostly adopts common soda-lime raw materials, containing a large number of internal impurities, bubbles, stripes and uneven material density. Its light transmittance is low, optical distortion is serious, dimensional tolerance is loose, and it cannot bear precise optical matching and thin-film coating process, only suitable for building doors, windows and simple isolation protection, absolutely unable to meet the requirements of precision imaging and photoelectric sensing equipment.

In contrast, Felix Glass optical domes use high-purity optical grade raw materials with strict material sorting and fine annealing treatment to eliminate internal stress. After ultra-precision grinding and high-precision surface polishing, the surface reaches high scratch-dig grade with ultra-smooth roughness, achieving ultra-high light transmittance, excellent optical uniformity and extremely low imaging distortion. Meanwhile, optical domes have stable physical and chemical properties, strong temperature shock resistance and corrosion resistance, and can perfectly match various professional optical coatings such as AR, IR and DLC.

For high-end surveillance cameras, underwater detection systems, aerospace photoelectric pods and industrial machine vision equipment, only professional optical domes can ensure long-term stable and clear optical performance, while ordinary glass will cause image deformation, light scattering and equipment failure in a short time.
    May 2,2026

  • What is the difference between BK7 and K9 optical glass?
BK7 and K9 are the two most widely used optical glass materials in the global optical industry, often seen as interchangeable alternatives. Many customers ask about their differences, so let’s break down the key similarities and distinctions clearly.

BK7, also known as borosilicate crown glass, is a European standard optical glass defined by ISO and DIN specifications. It is manufactured under strict international quality control systems, ensuring consistent optical performance across all production batches. K9, on the other hand, is the Chinese equivalent of BK7, formulated to match BK7’s optical and physical properties to the highest possible degree. Both materials share nearly identical core parameters, including a visible light transmittance of over 91%, a low thermal expansion coefficient, excellent chemical resistance, and outstanding machinability.

The primary difference between BK7 and K9 lies in their regional manufacturing standards and certifications. BK7 is widely recognized and accepted in European, American and other Western markets, while K9 is the preferred choice in Asian markets. In most practical applications, such as optical lenses, prisms, optical windows and industrial optical components, the two materials are fully interchangeable, as their refractive index, dispersion, and other key optical specifications are nearly identical. For example, if you are producing a standard camera lens, microscope component or industrial optical window, K9 can serve as a cost-effective alternative to BK7 without sacrificing any performance.

Another minor difference is the production process and quality control standards. While both materials meet high-quality requirements, some manufacturers may have slight variations in their production processes, leading to minor differences in surface quality or batch consistency. However, these variations are usually negligible for most industrial and commercial applications, especially when working with a reliable supplier like Felix Glass.

Our factory provides both BK7 and K9 optical glass parts with customized processing services, including precision cutting, surface polishing, anti-reflective coating and CNC machining, to meet the specific requirements of your projects. Whether you need BK7 optical glass for international projects or K9 optical glass for cost-effective solutions, we can deliver high-quality products that meet your exact specifications.

    - Product type: optical dome, display glass, AR/AG/AF coated glass, tempered glass, etc.
    - Material requirements: BK7, fused silica, sapphire, borosilicate glass, etc.
    - Size, thickness, diameter, and tolerance requirements (critical for precision optical products)
    - Coating requirements: AR, AG, AF, anti-UV, conductive coating, etc., and transmittance/reflectance requirements
    - Processing requirements: drilling, etching, tempering, polishing, edge grinding, etc.
    - Application scenario: automotive, medical, industrial, consumer electronics, etc. (helps us optimize the product design)

     2. Provide detailed drawings or 3D files
If you have product drawings (2D CAD drawings, 3D STEP/IGS files), please attach them to your sample request. Drawings are the most direct and accurate way to convey product requirements, avoiding misunderstandings caused by text description. Our engineering team can directly use the drawings for sample production, ensuring 100% consistency with your requirements.

    3. Communicate your core requirements and tolerance range clearly
Clearly inform us of your core functional requirements and acceptable tolerance range. For example, if you need an optical dome for a camera sensor, clearly inform us of the transmittance requirement, surface smoothness requirement, and impact resistance requirement. This helps our engineering team adjust the production process and material selection to meet your core needs, even if there are minor deviations in non-critical parameters.

     4. Confirm the sample plan and quotation before production
Before starting sample production, we will provide a detailed sample plan, including product design, production process, lead time, and cost. • What factors affect optical manufacturing cost?

    A:
The manufacturing cost of custom precision optical components is determined by multiple professional industrial factors, including optical material grade, dimensional tolerance precision, surface polishing standard, optical coating process, order batch volume, and special customized processing requirements. Understanding these core pricing factors helps global buyers optimize design, control budget, and select the most cost-effective optical solutions for medical, automotive, aerospace, laser, and machine vision applications.

First, optical raw material selection is the most fundamental factor affecting production cost. Standard optical substrates such as BK7 optical glass and common fused silica feature stable pricing and cost advantages for general visible and ultraviolet optical systems. In contrast, high-performance materials including high-purity fused silica, synthetic sapphire, ZnSe, and ZnS infrared crystalline materials require higher raw material investment due to their unique physical properties, extreme hardness, high-temperature resistance, and specialized infrared transmittance performance, significantly increasing overall manufacturing costs.

Second, tolerance accuracy and surface quality standards directly determine processing difficulty and production expenses. Conventional loose-tolerance optical parts require only basic CNC machining and ordinary polishing procedures. However, ultra-precision optical components with strict dimensional tolerance, high flatness, parallelism, and low surface scratch grades demand repeated fine grinding, ultra-precision optical polishing, and full-item professional inspection. Higher precision standards extend production cycles, consume more equipment resources, and greatly improve manufacturing costs.

Third, optical coating types and coating layers bring obvious price differences. Basic single-layer AR anti-reflection coating offers cost-effective performance for regular optical products. In comparison, multi-layer composite coatings such as AR+AG, AR+AF, and full AR+AG+AF coating, as well as customized high-transmission laser coating and infrared optical coating, require advanced vacuum coating equipment, strict environment control, and longer processing time, resulting in higher technical and production costs.

Fourth, order quantity directly affects unit price. Large-batch mass production effectively averages fixed costs such as fixture setup, drawing DFM evaluation, and machine debugging, achieving lower unit manufacturing cost. Small-batch prototype orders and customized sample production retain relatively higher unit cost due to independent process setup and low material utilization rate.

Additionally, special customized requirements including special edge chamfering, laser marking, ultra-clean cleaning, high-standard packaging, and strict quality testing reports will further optimize product performance while adding corresponding manufacturing costs.

  • Q11: Is it possible to print on the side of AG glass ?

No matter it’s single side AG glass or double sided AG glass, both can be silkscreen printed.

it is absolutely possible to print on the side (edge) or surface of AG (Anti-Glare) glass, and FELIX GLASS has rich professional experience and mature technology in this field, providing customers with high-quality custom printed AG glass solutions for various application scenarios.

    ### 1. Feasibility of Printing on AG Glass
AG glass has a micro-rough anti-glare surface formed by physical or chemical etching, which is different from the smooth surface of ordinary glass. This micro-rough structure can increase the adhesion of ink, making printing more firm and durable, and not easy to fall off. At the same time, we can choose to print on the edge (side) of the glass or the non-AG surface of the glass according to customer needs, avoiding affecting the anti-glare effect of the AG surface. For edge printing, we use professional edge grinding and pretreatment technology to ensure the flatness of the edge, providing a good printing base.

    ### 2. Printing Technologies Supported by FELIX GLASS
We provide a variety of mature printing technologies to meet different customer needs:
    - **Screen Printing**: The most commonly used printing technology for AG glass, suitable for mass production of logos, patterns, text, and decorative lines. • Q10: What’s the unit of Haze ?
Haze is a core optical performance indicator for glass, especially AG (Anti-Glare) glass, and its unit is **percentage (%)**. It is used to quantify the degree of light scattering when light passes through the glass, which directly affects the anti-glare effect, clarity, and visual experience of the glass.

    ### 1. Definition and Unit of Haze
Haze, also known as turbidity, is defined as the percentage of the transmitted light that deviates from the incident direction by more than 2.5° when parallel light passes through the glass, relative to the total transmitted light. The calculation formula is:
    **Haze (%) = (Scattered Transmitted Light / Total Transmitted Light) × 100%**
The unit of haze is percentage (%), which is a dimensionless percentage value, used to intuitively reflect the light scattering ability of the glass. The higher the haze value, the stronger the light scattering ability of the glass, the better the anti-glare effect, but the slightly lower the clarity; the lower the haze value, the weaker the light scattering, the clearer the glass, but the slightly worse the anti-glare effect.

    ### 2. Measurement Standard and Method of Haze
The measurement of haze is carried out in strict accordance with international standards, such as **ASTM D1003** and **ISO 14782**. We use professional haze meters (also called transparency and haze meters) for measurement. The measurement process is as follows:
    - **Instrument Calibration**: Calibrate the haze meter with a standard sample before measurement to ensure measurement accuracy.
    - **Sample Preparation**: Clean the glass sample to be tested to ensure no dust, oil, or scratches on the surface, avoiding affecting the measurement results.
    - **Measurement**: Place the sample in the haze meter, emit parallel light to pass through the sample, and the instrument automatically measures the total transmitted light and scattered transmitted light, and calculates the haze value.
    - **Multiple Measurements**: Conduct multiple measurements on different positions of the sample to ensure the uniformity of the haze value of the glass.

    ### 3. Haze Range of AG Glass and Application Scenarios
FELIX GLASS can customize the haze value of AG glass according to customer needs, and the common haze range is **5% to 30%**, which is suitable for different application scenarios:
    - **Low Haze (5%-10%)**: High clarity, slightly weaker anti-glare effect, suitable for indoor high-end displays, VR/AR headsets, and medical devices that require high visual clarity.
    - **Medium Haze (10%-20%)**: Balance between anti-glare effect and clarity, the most commonly used haze range, suitable for automotive displays, industrial control screens, and consumer electronics touch screens.
    - **High Haze (20%-30%)**: Strong anti-glare effect, slightly lower clarity, suitable for outdoor displays, public kiosks, and bright environments that require strong anti-glare.

    ### 4. FELIX GLASS's Haze Control Technology
We have advanced AG coating and etching technology, which can precisely control the haze value of AG glass, ensuring the uniformity and stability of the haze value of the same batch of products:
    - **Precision Etching Technology**: Control the micro-roughness of the glass surface by adjusting the etching process parameters, so as to accurately control the haze value, with a control accuracy of ±1%.
    - **Uniform Coating Technology**: Use vacuum coating technology to form a uniform anti-glare coating on the glass surface, ensuring that the haze value of each position of the glass is consistent, with no local difference.
    - **Haze Quality Inspection**: Conduct 100% haze inspection on each AG glass product to ensure that the haze value meets the customer's specified range, and provide a detailed haze test report.

    ### 5. Factors Affecting Haze Value
The haze value of glass is mainly affected by the following factors:
    - **Surface Roughness**: The higher the surface roughness of AG glass, the higher the haze value.
    - **Coating Thickness and Uniformity**: The thickness and uniformity of the AG coating directly affect the haze value.
    - **Glass Thickness**: The thicker the glass, the slightly higher the haze value, but the impact is small.
    - **Measurement Environment**: The temperature, humidity, and light environment during measurement will affect the measurement results, so we carry out measurement in a standard laboratory environment.

    ### 6. How to Choose the Right Haze Value
When choosing the haze value of AG glass, you need to comprehensively consider the application scenario, use environment, and visual requirements:
    - **Outdoor Use**: Choose high haze (20%-30%) to resist strong sunlight reflection.
    - **Indoor High-End Use**: Choose low haze (5%-10%) to pursue high clarity.
    - **General Touch Screen Use**: Choose medium haze (10%-20%) to balance anti-glare and clarity.

FELIX GLASS's professional technical team can provide you with professional haze value selection suggestions according to your product application scenarios and requirements, and customize AG glass products with the most suitable haze value to meet your visual and performance needs.

  • Q7: How to recognize the etched side?
Question: How to recognize the etched side?
    Answer:
Recognizing the etched (AG/anti-glare) side of optical glass is crucial for quality control and application matching. Here are 3 practical and high-precision methods:

    1. Visual Light Reflection Test (Most Used)
Place the glass under natural light or fluorescent lamps. Observe the light reflection on both sides: the etched side will produce diffuse reflection, with blurred and scattered light (matte, non-glare effect); the non-etched side will form a clear, mirror-like specular reflection of the light source. This method is the most convenient and widely used in on-site inspection, with 100% accuracy for standard AG glass.
    2. Tactile Touch Test
Gently slide your finger across the glass surface. The etched side has a matte, slightly rough texture (smooth and non-sticky hand feeling), while the non-etched side is smooth and flat. Note: This method is not suitable for AF-coated glass, as the AF layer will change the surface touch feeling.
    3. Backlighting Transparency Test
Hold the glass up to a strong light source and observe from the opposite side. The etched side shows a frosted, semi-opaque matte effect, while the non-etched side is fully transparent. This method is especially effective for high-haze AG glass, making it easy to distinguish even for thick glass.

In summary, the visual light reflection test is the first choice for quick identification, and it can be combined with the tactile test for double verification. Our AG optical glass undergoes strict process control, ensuring clear distinction between etched and non-etched sides and stable product performance.

  • Q6: For AF(Anti-Fingerprint) coating, how much is the qualified water contact angle?
Question: For AF(Anti-Fingerprint) coating, how much is the qualified water contact angle?
    Answer:
AF (Anti-Fingerprint) coating, also known as oleophobic coating, is a high-performance functional coating based on perfluoropolyether materials, which is widely used on optical glass, display panels, touch screens and other optical components. Its core function is to endow the glass surface with excellent hydrophobic and oleophobic properties, effectively reducing the adhesion of fingerprints, oil stains and water stains, and achieving an easy-to-clean effect. The water contact angle (WCA) is the most core and authoritative quantitative index to evaluate the performance and qualification of AF coating, and its industry standards and testing principles are clearly defined as follows:

    1. Industry Qualification Standards for Water Contact Angle

The water contact angle refers to the angle between the tangent of a static water drop and the glass surface, which directly reflects the surface energy of the coating: the larger the angle, the lower the surface energy, and the better the hydrophobic and anti-fingerprint performance. The industry's unified qualification standards are divided into three levels:

    - Basic Qualified Standard (Entry Level): For general consumer electronics, daily display glass and other conventional applications, the initial water contact angle of qualified AF coating must be ≥ 105°. This is the minimum threshold to ensure basic anti-fingerprint and easy-to-clean performance, which can effectively reduce the adhesion of daily fingerprints and oil stains, and is the most widely used standard in the market.
    - High-Quality Standard (Mid-to-High End): For automotive displays, industrial touch screens, outdoor display screens and other medium and high-end application scenarios with high durability requirements, the qualified standard is ≥ 110°. This level of coating has lower surface energy, better hydrophobic and oleophobic effects, and can maintain stable performance in complex environments such as high temperature and high humidity.
    - Premium Flagship Standard (Top Level): For high-end smart phones, professional optical instruments, medical display glass and other top-level products, the strictest requirement is ≥ 115°. This level of AF coating has ultra-low surface energy, excellent anti-fouling performance, and can achieve a "water drop rolling without leaving a trace" effect, which is the highest standard in the industry.

    2. Performance Grading and Unqualified Judgment

To help customers intuitively judge the quality of AF coating, we have formulated a clear performance grading standard based on water contact angle:

    - WCA < 90°: Hydrophilic surface, no anti-fingerprint effect, completely unqualified. This situation usually means that the coating is missing, failed or severely aged, and cannot meet any application requirements.
    - 90° < WCA < 105°: Substandard AF coating, poor anti-fingerprint performance, unqualified. The coating has weak hydrophobic and oleophobic effects, fingerprints and oil stains are easy to adhere, and cannot meet the basic use requirements.
    - 105° ≤ WCA < 110°: Qualified basic grade, with good anti-fingerprint and easy-to-clean performance, suitable for conventional consumer electronics applications.
    - 110° ≤ WCA < 115°: High-quality mid-to-high end grade, with excellent hydrophobic and oleophobic performance, suitable for automotive, industrial and other harsh environment applications.
    - WCA ≥ 115°: Premium flagship grade, with ultra-high performance, suitable for high-end optical products and professional instruments.

    3. Testing Principle and Additional Durability Requirements

The water contact angle is tested by the static sessile drop method, which is the international standard testing method:

    1. Drop 2-5μL of pure water on the surface of the AF coating to be tested, keep the glass horizontal and static.
    2. Use a professional contact angle measuring instrument to capture the shape of the water drop, and measure the angle between the tangent of the water drop and the glass surface, which is the water contact angle value.

In addition to the initial water contact angle, a truly qualified AF coating must also pass the friction resistance durability test, which is an important indicator to distinguish low-quality and high-quality coatings:

    - After 3000 times of standard steel wool friction (load 1kg), the water contact angle of qualified coating should still be ≥ 100°, ensuring long-term use without performance degradation.
    - For high-end automotive and industrial grade coatings, it is required to maintain a water contact angle ≥ 105° after 5000-8000 times of friction, with extremely high durability.

    4. Our Product Advantages

As a professional optical glass manufacturer, our AF coating products strictly follow the highest industry standards:

    - All products have an initial water contact angle of ≥ 110°, and the flagship series reaches ≥ 115°, far exceeding the basic qualification requirements.
    - All coatings pass the 5000 times steel wool friction test, and the water contact angle remains stable, ensuring long-term service life.
    - We support customized coating solutions for different application scenarios, providing professional test reports and quality certificates for each batch of products.

  • Q5: Will the glass strength be affected after AG etching?
Question: Will the glass strength be affected after AG etching?
    Answer:
AG (Anti-Glare) etching is a core surface treatment process for optical glass, which forms a uniform micro-rough structure on the glass surface through chemical etching, effectively reducing specular reflection and glare, and is widely used in display panels, touch screens, automotive displays, industrial equipment and other fields. A common concern from customers is whether AG etching will damage the mechanical strength of the glass. The clear conclusion is: with professional, strictly controlled AG etching process, the glass strength will not be negatively affected, and can even maintain or exceed the mechanical performance of the original glass.

    1. Mechanism Analysis: Why AG Etching Won't Weaken Glass Strength

Many customers mistakenly believe that "etching removes glass material, so it will reduce strength", but this is a misunderstanding caused by ignoring the process principle. The core reasons why professional AG etching will not affect glass strength are as follows:

    - Minimal Material Removal: The AG etching process only removes a very thin layer of glass surface, usually only 5-20μm, which is less than 1/50 of the total thickness of conventional display glass (0.5mm-1.1mm). This extremely small material removal has a negligible impact on the overall mechanical load-bearing capacity of the glass.
    - No Harmful Micro-Cracks Introduced: The key to glass strength lies in whether there are sharp micro-cracks on the surface, which are the source of stress concentration and fracture. Professional chemical AG etching uses strictly controlled acid concentration, temperature, time and stirring speed, which can form a uniform, stress-free micro-pit structure on the glass surface, avoiding the generation of sharp micro-cracks, and will not become a hidden danger of strength failure.
    - No Damage to Strengthened Layer: For chemically strengthened glass (such as Gorilla Glass, aluminosilicate glass) commonly used in high-end displays, the AG etching process only acts on the outermost surface of the glass, and will not damage the internal ion exchange stress layer, so the glass can still maintain the high strength brought by the strengthening process.

    2. Process Control: The Core Guarantee of Glass Strength

To ensure that AG etching does not affect glass strength, strict process control in all links is essential:

    - Single-Sided Etching Protection: Use high-temperature resistant protective film to protect the non-etched side of the glass during the etching process, avoiding acid corrosion and damage to the opposite side, ensuring the integrity of the glass structure.
    - Precise Etching Parameter Control: Strictly control the concentration of hydrofluoric acid, etching temperature, time and other parameters, avoid over-etching, and ensure that the surface microstructure is uniform and free of defects.
    - Post-Etching Stress Relief Treatment: After etching, the glass undergoes edge polishing, cleaning and stress relief annealing treatment, eliminating the edge stress concentration caused by cutting and etching, further improving the overall strength of the glass.
    - Strict Quality Inspection: Each batch of AG glass undergoes 100% appearance inspection and mechanical performance sampling inspection, including flexural strength test, impact test, drop test, etc., to ensure that the strength meets the industry standards and customer requirements.

    3. Performance Data and Application Verification

A large number of industry tests and practical applications have fully verified that professional AG etching will not reduce glass strength:

    - Flexural Strength Test: The flexural strength of AG etched glass is basically the same as that of the original glass, and even slightly improved in some cases, because the uniform micro-rough structure can disperse the surface stress.
    - Impact and Drop Test: AG glass has been widely used in automotive displays, industrial touch screens, outdoor display screens and other harsh environment applications, and can pass the strict drop test, impact test and vibration test required by the industry, fully meeting the mechanical performance requirements of terminal products.
    - Long-Term Durability: The AG etched surface has stable chemical properties, and will not cause strength degradation during long-term use, temperature changes and humidity changes, ensuring the service life of the product.

    4. Our Product Advantages

As a professional optical glass manufacturer, we have more than 10 years of AG etching process experience, and strictly control every link to ensure the strength of AG glass:

  • Q3: What is the stress standard after glass chemical strengthening?
Question: What is the stress standard after glass chemical strengthening?
    Answer:
Chemical strengthening (also known as ion exchange strengthening) is a core process to improve the mechanical strength of glass, which is widely used in high-strength display glass, mobile phone cover glass, automotive glass and other fields. The stress index is the most critical quantitative standard to evaluate the quality and performance of chemically strengthened glass. A complete set of scientific and standardized stress standards includes surface compressive stress (CS) and stress layer depth (DOL), and different application scenarios have different grade requirements.

    1. Core Concept: Surface Compressive Stress (CS)

Surface compressive stress refers to the compressive stress formed on the glass surface after ion exchange, which is the core force to resist external impact and bending. The unit is MPa (Megapascal). The higher the surface compressive stress, the stronger the ability of the glass to resist external damage such as sharp object impact and bending deformation.

    - Basic Qualified Standard: For general consumer electronics glass (such as entry-level mobile phone cover glass), the surface compressive stress of qualified products must be ≥ 600MPa. This is the minimum threshold to ensure that the glass can withstand daily drop and collision.
    - Mid-to-High End Standard: For mid-range smart devices and industrial control glass, the standard is 700MPa ≤ CS < 900MPa. This level of glass has better impact resistance, and can pass higher drop height tests.
    - Premium Standard: For high-end mobile phones, automotive display glass and high-strength application scenarios, the surface compressive stress is required to be ≥ 900MPa. This ultra-high stress glass has extremely strong anti-drop and anti-impact capabilities, and is the highest grade in the current market.

    2. Core Concept: Stress Layer Depth (DOL)

Stress layer depth refers to the depth of the compressive stress layer formed on the glass surface by ion exchange, and the unit is μm (micrometer). It directly determines the scratch resistance and long-term strength of the glass. If the stress layer is too shallow, even if the surface stress is high, the glass is easy to be scratched and the strength will drop sharply.

    - Basic Qualified Standard: For conventional glass thickness (0.5mm-1.1mm), the stress layer depth of qualified products must be ≥ 10μm. This ensures basic scratch resistance.
    - Mid-to-High End Standard: For products with high scratch resistance requirements, the standard is 15μm ≤ DOL < 30μm. This depth can effectively prevent surface scratches during use.
    - Premium Standard: For ultra-thin glass (thickness <0.5mm) and high-strength automotive glass, the stress layer depth is required to be ≥ 30μm, and some special products even reach 40μm. This deep stress layer can ensure that the glass still maintains high strength after long-term use.

    3. Industry-Unified Qualification Standards

Combined with the international optical glass industry standards (such as ISO 12799, ASTM C1036), the complete stress standards for different types of chemically strengthened glass are summarized as follows:

Glass Type Surface Compressive Stress (CS) Stress Layer Depth (DOL) Application Scenario
Soda-Lime Glass (Entry Grade) 500-700MPa 8-15μm Low-end home appliances, ordinary display panels
Aluminosilicate Glass (Mid-Grade) 700-900MPa 12-25μm Mainstream mobile phones, tablets, automotive displays
High-Strength Aluminosilicate (Premium Grade) ≥ 900MPa 20-40μm Flagship mobile phones, curved glass, automotive control panels
Ultra-Thin Strengthened Glass 600-800MPa 15-30μm Foldable devices, ultra-thin touch screens

    4. Testing Principles and Unqualified Judgment

The stress of chemically strengthened glass is usually tested by a stress meter (photoelastic stress meter) based on the principle of photoelasticity:

    1. Place the glass sample on the stress meter, and use polarized light to irradiate the glass.
    2. The stress distribution inside the glass will change the polarization state of light, and the instrument will calculate the surface stress and stress layer depth through the obtained interference fringes.

    Unqualified Judgment Criteria:

    - If the surface compressive stress is lower than 500MPa, it is a serious unqualified product, and the risk of breakage during use is extremely high.
    - If the stress layer depth is lower than 8μm, it is unqualified, and the glass is prone to strength degradation after being scratched.
    - If the stress distribution is uneven (the difference between multiple test points exceeds 100MPa), the product is unqualified, which may cause local breakage.

    5. Our Product Advantages and Process Control

As a professional optical glass manufacturer, our chemically strengthened glass strictly follows the highest industry standards, and has the following core advantages:

    - Precise Process Control: The fully automated ion exchange production line strictly controls parameters such as temperature, time and salt bath concentration, ensuring that the stress index of each batch of products is within the target range, with a tolerance of ±50MPa.
    - Multi-Grade Customization: We can provide stress standards of different grades according to customer needs, from entry-level 550MPa to premium 1000MPa, to meet the application requirements of different products.
    - Strict Quality Inspection: Each piece of glass is equipped with a stress test report, and the pass rate of 100% sampling inspection ensures product stability.
    - High Compatibility: Our stress layer depth design is perfectly matched with different glass thicknesses, which can effectively avoid the problem of glass warping or delamination caused by excessive stress.

In summary, the stress standard after glass chemical strengthening is not a single value, but a combination of surface compressive stress and stress layer depth. Only when both indicators meet the standard can the glass have reliable mechanical strength and service life.

  • Q2: What kind of processes can achieve the “dead front effect” of cover glass? Answer:
Question: What kind of processes can achieve the "dead front effect" of cover glass?
    Answer:
The "dead front effect" (also known as "hidden when off, visible when on" effect) is a high-value visual function of cover glass, which is widely used in smart home control panels, automotive central controls, smart door locks, consumer electronics and other fields. The core of this effect is to make the icons, text and patterns on the glass completely hidden in the unlit state, and clearly illuminated when the backlight is turned on, achieving a seamless, minimalist and high-end appearance. At present, the most mature, stable and widely used process to achieve the dead front effect is high-precision screen printing with special semi-transparent ink, supplemented by digital inkjet printing and other auxiliary processes for different application scenarios.

    1. Core Process: High-Precision Screen Printing with Special Ink

Screen printing is the mainstream and most reliable process for mass production of dead front cover glass, with the advantages of high consistency, low cost and strong durability. The core principle and process flow are as follows:

    (1) Process Principle

The dead front effect is realized by the special optical properties of the ink:

    - Unlit state: The special semi-transparent ink has extremely low light transmittance in natural light, and presents a consistent dark color (usually black, dark gray) with the surrounding ink layer, so the icons and patterns are completely hidden, and the entire glass surface presents a seamless, uniform appearance.
    - Backlit state: When the backlight is turned on, the light passes through the semi-transparent ink of the icon area, making the icons, text and patterns clearly illuminated, while the non-icon area is covered by opaque ink, ensuring high contrast and clear readability of the display content.

    (2) Complete Process Flow

    1. Glass Substrate Preparation: Select high-transparency chemically strengthened glass, tempered glass or soda-lime glass as the substrate, and complete cutting, edge polishing, cleaning and other pre-treatment processes to ensure the flatness and cleanliness of the glass surface.
    2. Ink Formula Customization: Configure special semi-transparent ink for dead front effect, with precise control of light transmittance (usually 10%-30%), color difference and adhesion, to ensure the hiding effect in unlit state and the brightness in backlit state.
    3. High-Precision Screen Making: Make high-precision screen plates according to customer's graphic design, with printing accuracy up to ±0.05mm, ensuring the clarity and consistency of icons and text.
    4. Screen Printing & Curing: Print the icon pattern on the inner surface of the cover glass through screen printing, and then complete the ink curing through high-temperature baking (usually 150-200℃, 30-60 minutes) to ensure the adhesion and durability of the ink.
    5. Post-Processing & Inspection: Complete edge cleaning, appearance inspection, light transmittance test and backlit effect inspection to ensure that each product meets the dead front effect requirements.

    2. Auxiliary Process: Digital Inkjet Printing

Digital inkjet printing is an auxiliary process suitable for small-batch, personalized customization, with the advantages of no plate making, fast proofing and flexible design.

    - Process Principle: Use industrial-grade UV inkjet printer to directly print special dead front ink on the glass surface, and complete curing through UV light irradiation.
    - Applicable Scenarios: Small-batch customized products, complex graphic design, rapid proofing, etc.
    - Disadvantages: Compared with screen printing, the production efficiency is lower, the cost is higher, and the ink adhesion and durability are slightly inferior, so it is not suitable for large-scale mass production.

    3. Key Process Control Points to Ensure Dead Front Effect

To achieve a perfect dead front effect, strict control of the following key process links is essential:

    1. Ink Light Transmittance Control: The light transmittance of the icon ink must be strictly controlled within 10%-30%. Too high transmittance will lead to poor hiding effect in unlit state; too low transmittance will lead to insufficient brightness in backlit state.
    2. Printing Accuracy Control: The printing position deviation must be controlled within ±0.05mm to ensure the alignment of icons and backlight sources, avoiding the problem of light leakage and blurring.
    3. Ink Adhesion Control: The ink must pass the 100-grid adhesion test, scratch resistance test and high and low temperature resistance test to ensure that it will not fall off or fade during long-term use.
    4. Color Difference Control: Ensure the color consistency of the icon ink and the surrounding ink layer in unlit state, avoiding the problem of pattern exposure caused by color difference.

    4. Process Comparison and Selection Suggestions

Process Type Advantages Disadvantages Applicable Scenarios
Screen Printing High production efficiency, low cost, high ink adhesion, good consistency, mass production suitable High plate making cost, not suitable for small batch customization Mass production of automotive central controls, smart home panels, consumer electronics
Digital Inkjet Printing No plate making, fast proofing, flexible design, small batch customization suitable Low production efficiency, high cost, slightly poor ink adhesion Small batch customized products, rapid proofing, complex graphic design

  • Q1: Can the AG and AR process be realized on a cover glass ?
Question: Can the AG and AR process be realized on a cover glass ?
    Answer:
Absolutely Yes. AG (Anti-Glare) and AR (Anti-Reflection) processes can be perfectly and stably combined on a single piece of cover glass, which is a mature, mass-proven technology widely used in high-end display, automotive, industrial and consumer electronics fields. This dual-coating solution integrates the core advantages of both processes, solving the pain points of single-process glass and achieving a comprehensive upgrade of display performance.

    1. Core Functions of AG and AR Processes

First, it is necessary to clarify the respective functions of AG and AR processes, which are complementary and non-conflicting:

    - AG (Anti-Glare) Process: Also known as anti-glare treatment, it forms a uniform micro-rough structure on the glass surface through chemical etching or physical spraying, which converts specular reflection into diffuse reflection, effectively eliminating glare, reducing ambient light reflection, and improving the visibility of the screen in strong light environments.
    - AR (Anti-Reflection) Process: Also known as anti-reflection coating, it deposits a multi-layer dielectric film (such as SiO₂, TiO₂) on the glass surface through vacuum magnetron sputtering, which uses the principle of optical interference to reduce the reflectivity of the glass surface from 8% (ordinary glass) to less than 1%, greatly improving light transmittance and display contrast.

    2. Compatibility and Process Implementation of AG+AR Dual Coating

AG and AR processes are completely compatible, and the mature process flow is as follows:

    1. Glass Substrate Pre-Treatment: Select high-transparency chemically strengthened glass as the substrate, complete cutting, edge polishing, cleaning and other processes to ensure the flatness and cleanliness of the glass surface.
    2. AG Etching Process: First, perform chemical etching on one side of the glass to form a uniform AG anti-glare surface, and then complete cleaning and drying to ensure no residual etching solution.
    3. AR Coating Process: Deposit a multi-layer AR anti-reflection coating on the AG-etched surface (or the opposite smooth surface, according to customer needs) through vacuum magnetron sputtering. The AR coating can perfectly adapt to the micro-rough structure of the AG surface, ensuring the uniformity and performance of the coating.
    4. Post-Processing & Inspection: Complete AF (Anti-Fingerprint) coating (optional), appearance inspection, light transmittance test, reflectivity test, haze test and other quality inspections to ensure that the product meets the performance standards.

    3. Core Advantages of AG+AR Dual Coating Cover Glass

Compared with single AG or single AR glass, the dual-coating solution has irreplaceable comprehensive advantages:

    - Eliminate Glare and Improve Transmittance Simultaneously: AG eliminates the glare caused by ambient light, and AR reduces the reflectivity of the glass surface, achieving a "no reflection, no glare" display effect, which is especially suitable for outdoor display, automotive central control and other strong light environments.
    - Improve Display Contrast and Clarity: AR coating increases light transmittance by more than 97%, and AG coating eliminates specular reflection, making the screen content clearer, more vivid and higher in contrast, greatly improving the user's visual experience.
    - Wide Application Scenarios: It is widely used in high-end smart phones, tablet computers, automotive displays, industrial control screens, outdoor advertising machines, medical display equipment and other fields, meeting the dual needs of anti-glare and high transmittance.
    - Compatible with Other Functional Coatings: AG+AR dual coating can be combined with AF (anti-fingerprint), anti-UV, anti-blue light and other functional coatings to achieve a one-stop solution of multiple functions.

    4. Key Performance Indicators of AG+AR Dual Coating Glass

The standard performance parameters of mature AG+AR dual coating cover glass are as follows:

Performance Index Standard Value Function Description
Light Transmittance ≥ 97% AR coating significantly improves light transmittance, making the screen brighter
Surface Reflectivity ≤ 1% AR coating reduces specular reflection, eliminating screen reflection
Haze 5%-20% (customizable) AG coating controls diffuse reflection, eliminating glare
Pencil Hardness ≥ 7H High hardness of AR coating, ensuring scratch resistance
Coating Adhesion Pass 100-grid test Stable combination of AG and AR coatings, no falling off
