What drawings and information do you need to quote a subsea optical dome?
1. What drawings and dimensions do I need before asking for a quote?
A quote goes back and forth most often when the interface isn't fully drawn. Send us the following on your dome and housing drawings, and we can usually give you a feasible scope in one round:
- Inner and outer radii, explicitly labeled — not just one sphere radius.
- Diameter, center thickness, edge thickness, and thickness uniformity.
- Angular coverage — hemispherical or hyper-hemispherical.
- Flange, O-ring groove, step, sealing-face finish and chamfer features.
- Target operating depth / differential pressure, seawater exposure and temperature range.
- Material and coating requirements with the wavelength band you actually work in.
Where a feature — a groove, a bolt circle, a locating step — lives, on the dome or on the housing, has to be unambiguous on the drawing. If it isn't, ask before you order, not after assembly.
Have a drawing ready? Upload it in the RFQ →. More detail on what we review is in our subsea optical dome engineering hub.
2. Who is responsible for the flange, O-ring groove and housing interface?
This is where subsea projects most often run into leak problems later.
The short answer: whoever owns the drawing owns the feature. If the O-ring groove is cut into your housing, we machine the dome to match that groove. If the groove is meant to be in the dome, we machine it to your housing's dimensions. We don't assume — we read the drawing you approve.
When you send files, explicitly mark each groove, bolt-circle hole and step as belonging to the dome or to the housing. We confirm feasibility and the inspection method (CMM, height gauge, etc.) in writing before quoting, so the first assembly isn't a guessing session.
3. What information lets you quote in one round instead of three?
A project becomes a genuine, workable inquiry when we can see four things:
- The drawing (dome + housing interface).
- Target depth and pressure conditions.
- Lens information — lens model, focal length, sensor format, and entrance-pupil position if you have it.
- Quantity and target lead time.
Missing any of these, we can still talk, but we can't quote a price, a pressure scope or a delivery date — and we won't invent one. If you're not sure yet on the lens or the depth, say so in the message; we'll tell you what to decide next.
